September is African Immigrant Heritage Month — a time to celebrate the many African communities that have helped shape New York and our nation. It was a joy to celebrate alongside African New Yorkers whose cultures and heritage are woven into the fabric of our city. Africa is alive in every corner of New York: in the Nigerian bakeries along Glenmore Avenue, the shops of Harlem’s Le Petit Sénégal and the Egyptian restaurants of Steinway. This month, we honor the African immigrants who have made a home here without ever leaving home behind. Our city is better because of them.

The Postcards memorial honors the 274 Staten Island residents who were killed in the horrific terror attacks of September 11, 2001. Their names and birthdays are preserved here forever. Their profiles are carved into granite, each one facing toward Ground Zero. It is a solemn reminder that behind every name was a whole life. A person with family who loved them and a future they should have had. 25 years later, we remember not only the unimaginable pain our city endured, but every person who never came home and every family that has carried that loss ever since. I was honored to stand with those families and Staten Island leaders today to remember what this community lost. We will Never Forget.
